Understanding Depression
In my experience, I’ve discovered that depression is a complex and deeply personal experience, and my approach to treatment reflects this understanding.
Symptoms of Depression
Common symptoms of depression include:
- Loss of appetite or overeating
- Sleep disturbances
- Persistent sadness or irritability
- Mood swings
- Fatigue and loss of energy
- Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
- Procrastination and difficulty concentrating
In my practice, I aim to comprehend the individual significance of depression for each client. This involves exploring their personal experiences, understanding their emotions, and recognizing how their depression uniquely influences their life.
I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, and Trauma-Informed care to acknowledge that the origins of depression often link back to traumatic experiences or a variety of other potential causes like mood dysregulation, genetic predisposition, and stressful life events. These encounters influence our reactions and can manifest as depression in different ways. Hence, these treatment methods can complement medication management, exercises, and other coping strategies that clients acquire during their treatment.
As a therapist focusing on strengths, I emphasize the resilience and capabilities of my clients. I believe in the importance of identifying and building upon these strengths to manage depression. My objective is to assist clients in not only managing their symptoms but also understanding and dealing with the root causes of their depression.
