Therapy for Children
I work with younger clients ages 5 to 10 years old. I create a safe space that helps my client process their feelings and behaviors through play therapy, music, therapeutic book stories, arts and crafts. Through the process of their treatment parents participate in every other session in the last 10 minutes of the session as a support system for the client’s treatment as an aid to help client practice during the week their therapeutic assignment or parent’s therapeutic assignments.
Here’s what makes my approach special:
Play Therapy: This form of therapy allows children to explore their emotions and behaviors freely. It’s a non-intrusive way for them to express and process their feelings, especially when dealing with complex issues like depression, anxiety, or trauma.
Arts and Crafts: Through creative activities, children can reflect on their experiences and emotions. This not only aids in their treatment but also helps in developing their creative expression.
Cultural and Linguistic Sensitivity: Recognizing the importance of cultural background, I offer therapy in both Spanish and English. This ensures comfort and better understanding for children, especially those from bilingual families or immigrant backgrounds.
Sensory Sensitivity: Understanding the unique sensory needs of children is crucial. For instance, a child’s aversion to the taste of toothpaste can be a sensory issue. I approach such challenges empathetically, exploring alternatives and understanding the child’s perspective to find a solution.
Emotional Expression and Coping Skills: My sessions are geared towards helping children recognize and articulate their feelings. Through play and art, they learn coping strategies, relaxation skills, and how to manage conflicts, whether with peers or family members.
Adjustment and Transition: For children from immigrant families, adjusting to a new country can be challenging. I use play therapy to help them process their experiences, including grief and loss associated with leaving their home country.
If your child is facing emotional challenges or difficulties in adjusting to life changes, therapy can be a transformative experience. I invite you to embark on this journey of self-discovery and healing with your child.
